The rumor was first recorded in 1607. A book existed, ancient even then, that he called “Ye Booke of Arcane Knowledge”; according to its owner, it was a collection of nearly five hundred spells both dark and light. He was an Elizabethan academic far too famous to be mentioned here. When he died in 1609 his library, one of the largest in Europe, was broken up. The book was not found, but the legend of it continued to be whispered for the next three centuries. It was, perhaps the most famous, most storied actual Grim*ire in history.

In 1939, the famous London antiquarian, Albert Foyle, came across a sheaf of papers apparently torn from a much lengthier work. He recognized it at once: a collection of one hundred spells from the legendary ‘recipe book of necromancy,’ but the pages he found were faint and fragile and they deteriorated to dust soon after Foyle’s discovery. Happily, he had them copied before they disappeared forever. He printed three copies only. He kept one. One he gave to the British Library where it may still be viewed. The third is a mystery, for it was lost during the war. Or was it?

Outlaw Effects is proud to offer you the latest book from the mind of Professor BC: DarkSpell.

You open Ye Booke of Arcane Knowledge and find it written in the language of the sixteenth-century necromancer. Difficult it is, but not impossible, to understand. One hundred spells that, if properly deciphered, bestow upon the reader genuine magical abilities. Restore health, protect wealth, influence love, cast a secret curse: the knowledge is here.

Have you deciphered the spell correctly? Have you actually called forth a spirit (or demon) to do your bidding? There is a test for each spell. Interpret the code aright, and suddenly you see the impossible unfold before your eyes.
DarkSpell is a new concept in book tests where the magic all happens in your spectator’s hands. She opens the book and selects a spell (no force) and, using a Tarot deck, pendulum, amulet, billets, or other props you already own, she apparently causes spiritual manifestations to occur simply by reading the spell. You seem to do nothing at all. You don’t even look at the book. The magic can happen across the room from the performer.

The spectator, following one of the spells, might deal out a quantity of face-down Tarot cards and name one, calling for it to be revealed. To her amazement, still following the spell, her hand selects the very card that proves she has succeeded in calling forth a spirit. The spell is still potent! . . . or she might deal one card face down and, using a pendulum over the book’s arcane image, successfully divine the card she has selected, again demonstrating the power of the spell. (Take note: she chooses the card at random and she succeeds in naming it using the spell.) She writes a name at random, destroys the paper, but the spell calls forth a spirit that can and does repeat the secret name to her.

In all, there are four physical effects (using Tarot, pendulums, billets, or a living/dead setup) and four mentalism effects encoded throughout the one-hundred spells of the book. The book is also arranged so you may work through a routine of all eight effects without once repeating. Also, like Professor BC’s other book offerings, DarkSpell is written so it may be read cover to cover without tipping the methods or discovering any repetitions. Each spell and every page looks nothing like any other. Each setup appears utterly unique.

The book may be used ‘out of the box’ as a mentalism effect with no additional props. It might also be used as a simple prop itself, lending an air of the arcane to your performance. However, that is only the beginning.

DarkSpell is not only a series of effects in itself, it is a utility prop for building other ‘hands off’ routines.

DarkSpell is designed to be used with any number of props you might already own or other routines you currently perform. You can use Tarot cards (marked or unmarked), Ouija boards, any of the Outlaw boards or boxes, switch boxes, or most any other props (low tech to high) that you wish to have apparently ‘triggered’ by a spectator while you seem to remain ‘hands off.’

DarkSpell offers you the illusion of real magic by distancing the magician from the effect.

DarkSpell is a full-color, hand-aged prop, 204 pages long, filled with Medieval and Renaissance illustrations. Inspired by no less than the Gutenberg Bible, the pages of DarkSpell feature calligraphic typeface, rubrications, and colorful dropped capitals. The cover is genuine leather stamped with both the famous Sigillum Dei Aemeth and, on the spine, the Monas Hieroglyphica (Google these to discover whose book this was in 1607—a famous name that Outlaw is keeping under the radar to avoid Google hits).

The book itself is compact (approximately 6 x 4.5 x 1; the size of Lillian’s Diary) to facilitate easy transport and walk-around performance, but still large enough to play from a stage.

DarkSpell comes complete with all instructions and a performance manual written by Professor BC filled with subtleties, handlings, routines, and scripts along with many ideas and helpful suggestions of how to incorporate DarkSpell into your existing routines using props you already own.
