Number 2 in the 1930's series brings us Luna
A replica of a circa 1936 Lunatic Asylum Patient Registry.
A Victorian beast of a structure built in 1851, it was the largest asylum in Europe and boasted the longest single corridor, which was more than a quarter of a mile, while the building itself had over six miles of corridors to house over 3000 patients in 32 different wards.
Some of the more famous residents included Aaron Kosminski, one of the men suspected of being Jack the Ripper, and two wives of Aleister Crowley (Rose Kelly and Maria Teresa de Miramar), the famous British occultist, writer, philosopher, mystic, and influencial member of the Golden Dawn, the Argenteum, and Ordo Templi Orientis.
Luna is over 150 pages and 100% examinable.
There are no "banks", no sevengali principle or short pages used.
You do not need to know a page number, you do not peek the book. The spectator never says or writes down the room they've chosen to visit. There are literally hundreds of rooms and hundreds of different patients in the registry.
The only thing used is the book.
Not only will you give a detailed description of the resident, who they are, why they were put there, how long they've been there, how old they are...you will reveal a certain item from the opposite page out of over 60 different items, an item that only applies to their chosen resident and not the other residents listed on the page. (BTW, this information is all in the entry they are looking at).
Your spectator will be asked to just "think" about the residents disposition (listed in the entry), their fears, sadness, rage and other emotions.
You then tell the spectator exactly what emotions they are experiencing. You become "empathic" as you describe the emotions they are only thinking about, emotions that are listed right there in the residents entry
You are able to "connect" two residents and reveal why one fears the other.
So much information is revealed, yet the method is diabolically simple. I think the Witches' Almanac is easy, well "Hatch" is even easier.
The presentation can be as dark or light as you wish to make it, it's up to the performer to decide. Every page in the book is hand aged. The cover is an aged and distressed velo stock, aged with the same expertise as the Witch book.
The book is exactly what the resident log looked like. The cover is the same institutional design.
Included are administration pages, Doctor listings and additional service departments. Luna is perfect for those that want to add a dramatic and emotional presentation to their set.
It is perfect for those that perform both mentalism and bizarre magick.
This book will appeal to not only the professional performer, but the hobbiest as well, not to mention the collectors!

Let me first say I own, Reflections and Witches Almanac already so I have some experience with those two Outlaw book tests. So for my review I will include Witches as a kind of comparison for those who own Witches Almanac. If you don’t then shame on you, but you will still get a good review of Luna so keep reading.
Let me add here my list of book tests that I have so you can see that I am very much into good book tests. Reflections, Witches Almanac, Dracula, Christmas Carol, My Word, Double Take, Word In A million, MOABT and Flashback. As well as my own creation, “The Harry Potter Deathly Hollows book exam”. I also use Hoy and AAA when I don’t have Reflections handy.
Now on with my review.
I received my copy of Luna and all I can say is it was worth the wait. I was on the pre-order list since the beginning of January. So if you still have not received yours yet don’t worry its coming. I can tell you this, you will be oh so happy with what you find.
Luna is so different than the rest of my book tests, it has truly moved to the top of my list of best book test I own, including my own creation. The top three are Luna, (mine of course) and then Witches. Sorry Witches and Harry, Luna took your spot.
The instructions are just what you would expect from Outlaw very detailed and with complete script. The story line is so great, lots of room for you to add your own ideas into it. Everything you need to perform the basic routine is in the instructions along with additional bits to get your creative juices flowing.
As soon as I received the book (yanked it out of the postman’s hands) went to my secrete lair, “the man’s cave”... also known as the “basement”. I cracked open the instructions, I was off and running.
After about an hour prep time and reading the instructions twice, I went right to my all time favorite test subject, “my wife”. I had her open the book, go through the basic routine and she was floored. She gave me one of those looks that only outlaw effects can get you, and I knew right then that I had another weapon.
What makes Luna go right to the top of my list is the method; I just wish I would have thought of it, I am so blown away. TRULY I keep thinking over and over how darn clever this is.With the book being 100% examinable makes it just as powerful as The Witches Almanac.
The Quality: Like Witches Almanac, Luna is perfectly aged. The book looks like it's from the 1930s, and the detail in the aging is once again perfect. Bravo Outlaw –
If you know anything about the other Outlaw book tests you know they are very clever and I know everyone would agree they are much more than just a book test.
In conclusion:
If I had just one book test to do in that very special setting where I wanted to really get in the heads of my spectator, I would use Luna. Trust me I have lots of effects in my arsenal to choose from.

"I received Luna today in the mail and have just finished sitting down with the instructions and looking through the book itself.
Let me also say that in my show right now, I use a combination of several book tests including Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, Harry Houdini as well as a few others. For this upcoming years show, I will be using a new theme - and part of that theme will wrap itself around some Outlaw products - including the Relic, the scorpion, and now Luna swapped out with Witches Almanac. I also have Witches Almanac and Sinister as well so I am familiar with the general technique.
Now then,
What you get:
A gorgeously aged book - what you have come to expect from Rick over at Outlaw. You also get a booklet for the instructions/stories/ideas, etc. I love reading through this and getting the background and "atmosphere" of the routines.
The effect:
You can have a spectator get into the mind of the patient as you describe what they were feeling, their treatments, Doctors notes, etc. And the spectator doesn't have to say anything - you just start doing the reading and that's that!
My overall thoughts:
I love this effect.
Thank you to Outlaw and Dr. Todd Landman (and the original Luna concept by Dr. Bill Cushman) It looks great, it's simple to do (everything you loved about Reflections and Witches, yet improved upon to the point that you will shake your head in amazement at how streamlined it is).
I love the fact that nothing needs to be said, nothing is used - you just start freaking them out immediately. And freak them out you can.
This is/can be very dark depending on your character/show. I love the examples in the instructions on different ways to present the effect - this will get you off to a good start as you make the routine your own. I am also looking forward to sharing detailed ideas over on the Outlaw Forum for owners of the book.
Another thing I like about this book is, similar to WA, you can really vary the way you present it - which is important to me as I will be doing this effect several times during the same day at the same place - and a few of the audience members will be the same (not many, but a couple). This will keep them guessing as well! Your imagination is the limit for this great little book!
Overall, this is a worker as you can do a very scientific/medical type of storyline/presentation or you can go with a very dark, very disturbing effect that leaves your audience gasping for breath!
It's truly up to you!
